I’m not much of a mind reader, but I’m pretty sure some of you were wondering this while reading the first issue of LAST STAND OF NEW KRYPTON: What is Pete Woods doing next?

Well, he’s doing two more issues of LAST STAND, that’s a given. And those’ll be a treat, brought to you by the writing team of Sterling Gates and James Robinson, and a perfect lead-in to the “100-Minute War” that’s kicking off in WAR OF THE SUPERMEN.

And, starting in June, Mr. Woods will be joining new writer Marc Guggenheim as the regular artist on ACTION COMICS. Pete’s done a spectacular job chronicling Kal-El’s adventures on New Krypton, so it was a no-brainer to have him swing on over to one of the ongoing titles. But what does he have to say about it all? Take it away, Pete:

“I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Marc on Action Comics. I also feel incredibly blessed to have David Finch doing covers- I have
been a fan for years. Marc and I have some fun plans for this book and intend for it to live up to it’s name!”

Oh, and we have some art to show, of course. Here are a few pages from the next issue of LAST STAND.

And if you’re going to be in the Seattle area this weekend, make sure to say hello to Pete, who’ll be at the Emerald City show as well.

But that’s not all we have to talk about here. In addition to Woods coming on board as the regular artist, ACTION COMICS will also be sporting a new cover artist in superstar David Finch, who kicks off his run with this menacing look at Lex Luthor.

Well, the ceiling in the direct market seems to be, at any rate, although DC seems less affected by that right now than Marvel.

DC starts the new year with numbers that aren’t stellar, but then again, they rarely are in January. And compared to January 2009, DC’s overall unit and dollar sales are slightly up, even. For the DC Universe line, dollar sales are down compared to last year’s, but that’s because Blackest Night was on a skip month, whereas January 2009 saw two issues of Final Crisis. At Vertigo, there was a slight increase in average unit sales, if nothing else, thanks to the debut of Grant Morrison and Sean Murphy’s Joe the Barbarian, another comic book that was two thirds a promotional item and came with a $ 1.00 cover price.

WildStorm, on the other hand, once again lowered the bar for its worst unit and dollar sales in history. In January 2009, the previous low point, the imprint’s estimated comic-book unit sales in the direct market were 95,910 (6,851 on average), with dollar sales of 310,353. In January 2010, it was 71,847 (6,532) and 241,809, respectively. Bluntly, WildStorm has to be selling a whole lot of comics outside the direct market for this not to be an utter disaster.

Siamo orgogliosi di annunciare che nel secondo semestre 2010 lanceremo una nuova etichetta editoriale dal titolo PANINI NOIR, dedicata alle crime/mistery/spy story più importanti degli ultimi anni. Dalle pagine di questa nuova linea pubblicheremo, tanto per cominciare, alcuni titoli di rilievo apparsi sotto l’etichetta VERTIGO CRIME della DC Comics nonché alcune opere del noir classico quali HISTORY OF VIOLENCE e ROAD TO PERDITION (ERA MIO PADRE) ben noti anche per le rispettive versioni cinematografiche.
All’interno dell’etichetta PANINI NOIR andranno a confluire sia l’intera linea VERTIGO CRIME (eccetto la graphic-novel di Hellblazer), sia titoli provenienti da altri editori e Paesi. Insomma, una nuova linea che, ne siamo certi, permetterà alle nostre edizioni di compiere quel salto di qualità e di autorialità in più che molti auspicavano, allargando la già massiccia produzione di “comics USA”, dal mainstream a una rilevante fetta di fumetto alternativo.
Cominceremo con due titoli di eccezionale spessore che di recente hanno sconvolto il pubblico e la critica americana per la loro impressionante originalità: parliamo di FILTHY RICH, dall’autore collezionista di Eisner Award, Brian Azzarello (100Bullets, Joker), e dal disegnatore dell’acclamata serie francese Young Ronin, Victor Santos. Segue la graphic-novel THE CHILL, con testi di Jason Starr per i disegni di Mick Bertilorenzi. Entrambi i titoli vedranno l’apporto del grande Lee Bermejo alle copertine.

WB has ended its search for a new publisher right in their own backyard, with Dan DiDio and JIm Lee named co-publishers. Geoff Johns has been named to the new position of Chief Creative Officer. Pat Caldon, a long-time DC veteran, will serve as Executive Vice President, Finance and Administration. The one new member of the executive team is John Rood, who has been named as Executive Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Business Development. Rood was most recently a SVP of marketing at ABC Family, but prior to that worked at WB in consumer products.

All five will report directly to Diane Nelson.

The announcement ends months of speculation over who would be brought in to run DC Entertainment — while many expected some Warners outsider to be named to the post, the names DiDio and Lee had often been in consideration, with Caldon, known for his business and administrative acumen, a dark horse. Rood comes in over the marketing team led by Steve Rotterdam.

Stuff unknown — with at least two of the new executive team (Lee and Johns) located on the West Coast, this will do little to allay the rumors of DC moving at least of some of its operations to Burbank.
