After unleashing a deluge of new titles in May, DC Comics’ lineup of major periodicals was fairly restrained in June. There were oversized “milestone” issues of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, the latest Green Arrow relaunch and, following up on a 2008 event, a second wave of Joker’s Asylum one-shots. Average and overall unit sales were slightly down from May as a result, but overall dollar sales still went up, so it wasn’t a bad month by any stretch.

At Vertigo and WildStorm, it was business as usual, meaning June was another steady month for Vertigo — and a predictably dire one for WildStorm, given that neither of their two flagship titles Astro City and Ex Machina came out. Average WildStorm sales were down to fewer than 6,140 units; the actual number we don’t know, because three of WildStorm’s new comic books failed to make the Top 300 chart in June.

What happens when the very powers that drive you to be a hero are also killing you?

Do you burn out or fade away?

Do you resign yourself to your fate or risk it all to die a hero?

Those are just some of the questions being faced by the new heroes that take the mantle of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents – a new and modern take on the classic 1960s property for today’s reader.

A while back, we showed off a teaser image announcing that the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents – the international UN heroes – would be joining the DC Universe. Well, now we’re ready to unveil some exciting details about these classic heroes and their latest incarnation.

Starting in November, a new version of The Higher United Nations Defense Enforcement Reserves will reach comic book fans, courtesy of writer Nick Spencer (JIMMY OLSEN) and CAFU, in a new ongoing series featuring a 20-page lead story and 10-page co-features.

Featuring a new batch of recruits brought in to take on the mantle of the original Agents, the team faces some difficult choices of their own, while revisiting the classic team’s troubled past and deadliest threats.

Spencer and CAFU will handle the main feature with an all-star lineup of artists handling the co-features. And a certain Mr. Frank Quitely is the artist on the cover to T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1, with a variant cover by Darwyn Cooke.

Wil Moss, editor of the new series, swung by The Source to give us a few more details beyond the basics.

“The new series casts the team as a covert special ops force dealing with global threats the rest of the DCU don’t even know exist — all the while struggling with their own choices to become agents and the tortured pasts they’re running from. With character-first storytelling and threats exploding from real-world headlines, this relaunch of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS will offer something new, different, and daring for both today’s broader comics audience and fans of the original team.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS will prove that there are still fresh new ways to approach the superhero team concept nd it will provide a platform to show off two very talented new creators — the writer, Nick Spencer, and the artist, CAFU.”

Thanks, Wil! T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1 hits in November.

Però questa pare la volta buona dato che dal Comicon di San Diego giunge questa notizia:

That’s definitely Jimmy Olsen. But who’s that with him? Looks a lot like Chloe Sullivan, doesn’t it? It is, and it’ll be Chloe’s first appearance in the DC Universe proper, as part of the upcoming JIMMY OLSEN co-feature.

Garbage Man? Looks like Aaron Lopresti art. Could this have something to do with the WEIRD WORLDS title we’ve heard mentioned recently? You’re getting warmer.

One of the most beloved characters to come out of the Milestone/DC partnership and a presence in TEEN TITANS (not to mention a star of his own cartoon series), Static will be starring in his own ongoing series, launching in 2011 and written by Felicia Henderson.

We’ll have more details on the series – including the art team – in the coming months, so stay tuned to this very blog. In the meantime, lets check in with Felicia about what her plans are for the series:

“When I met Dan DiDio, the first character we ever discussed was Static. Writing Teen Titans gave me an opportunity to play with this character a little. Now he’s getting his own book and I’m writing it! I’m a big Dwayne McDuffie’s fan, so it’s a privilege to reimagine the coming-of-age of a character he created. If not for the big bang, Static would be a regular, awkward, teenage guy trying to find himself — chasing girls, playing video games, downloading underground mixes of his favorite music. Instead, he has no time to find himself because the call of the superhero has found him. It’s a comic book writing dream for me.”

DC Comics’ periodical business had one of its better months in May, thanks to a host of new launches that were received well by retailers. The new arrivals include the DC Universe titles Brightest Day, Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, Justice League: Generation Lost and Birds of Prey, as well as Vertigo’s I, Zombie, among others. Average Vertigo sales continued to stabilize in May, thanks to a reinvigorated lineup, while DC’s WildStorm imprint, once again, depended on long-running creator-owned series Astro City and Ex Machina to remind people that it still exists, with average periodical sales of below 7,000.

This October, the Justice Society of America is getting a new chairman. And, by “chairman,” we mean a new writer: Marc Guggenheim. Guggenheim, who has a long list of film and comic book credits, will bring his fast-paced storytelling and refined eye to one of the DCU’s most legendary teams.

We’ll have more info on the new artist joining Guggenheim for his run, but we can announce superstar Shane Davis will be providing the lovely covers, like the powerful image above. What more can we say about the new direction? Well, take it away, Marc:

“For me, one of the advantages of working for “the Big Two” is getting to play with the biggest toys in the sandbox. The Justice Society so fits that category, my inner fanboy is squealing with delight. I was a huge fan of the JSA back when they were ensconced on Earth-2 and I was introduced to their exploits in the pages of Adventure Comics and the annual JLA/JSA crossovers. Our goal is to craft as JSA run for the ages and I think we’ve come up with something that’s revolutionary while still feeling uniquely “Justice Society.” Pay close attention to that second word. Big clue there.”
